What’s Stopping Us Stopping Climate Change?
Have you ever wondered why the government isn’t pulling out ALL the stops to deliver on climate change? Where IS the top level, joined-up thinking?
Extraordinary efforts are being made to avert climate catastrophe but not – most would agree – at the scale or speed needed.
At the Surrey Climate Commission, we have scratched our heads and decided that this is more than party politics. Ultimately, it’s a failure in governance that’s at the heart of our incapacity to tackle climate emergency.
And a fair few people we look up to think the same…
- We "need system change now" -- Chris Packham
- "Let's stop bringing buckets of water when only fire engines will do. Let's build our campaign for systemic change." -- George Monbiot
- "Altogether we are failing to deliver, and I think the whole political system is responsible" -- Lord Deben
We are very excited to be hosting this event in September. We’ve joined forces with the new Institute for Sustainability (IFS) at the University of Surrey headed up by Professor Lorenzo Fioramonti to bring you a talk in Surrey with some very big names in climate change. These are people who know government and who also know about delivery.
Join us at 6.30pm on Thursday 28th September when we’ll hear from:
Lord Deben, former Chair of the Climate Change Committee
Natalie Bennett, Green Party Peer
Ed Straw, Author and Specialist in Governance and Systems Thinking
This is must-hear if you are involved in climate change action.
If system change is the answer, it’s critical we learn about the real blocks which are preventing transformational delivery.
We’ll be asking, what would a system look like that’s fit to tackle the biggest crisis faced by humanity? How do we square our political system with delivering on the climate catastrophe?
There will be an opportunity to network during the interval, and again in the bar after the talk has finished at 8.45pm.
At the end of the event, we’d also like to invite YOU to join us and the IFS with some bigger picture solutions. We’ll also be making an announcement on next steps.
The Leatherhead Theatre is just 5 minutes walk from Leatherhead Station, with good train connections from London, Guildford and Dorking. If you need to drive, Leatherhead is 5 minutes from the M25 and 10 minutes from the A3.
You can book your tickets here. We look forward to seeing you on the 28th September – please put the date in your diary now!
